【摘要】:p>Thedimensional,shape,andsurfacetolerancesofrockcorespecimensareimportantfordeterminingrockpropertiesofintactspecimens.Thisisespeciallytrueforstrongrocks,greaterthan7250psi(50MPa).DimensionalandsurfacetolerancechecksarerequiredinthetestmethodslistedinSection2.1.Tosimplifytestproceduresinlaboratories,thepartsofthoseproceduresthatarecommontothetestmethodsinSection2.1aregiveninthisstandard.ThisprocedureisapplicabletoallthestandardslistedinSection2.1.However,specimensforTestMethodD2936donotneedtobemachinedortomeetthespecifiedtolerancesforflatnessandparallelism.Themoistureconditionofthespecimenatthetimeofthesamplepreparationcanhaveasignificanteffectuponthestrengthanddeformationcharacteristicsoftherock.Goodpracticegenerallydictatesthatlaboratorytestsbemadeuponspecimensrepresentativeoffieldconditions.Thus,itfollowsthatthefieldmoistureconditionofthespecimenshouldbepreserveduntilthetimeofthetest.Insomeinstances,however,theremaybereasonsfortestingspecimensatothermoisturecontents,fromsaturationtodry.Inanycase,themoisturecontentofthetestspecimenshouldbetailoredtotheproblemathand.Excessmoisturewillaffecttheadhesionofresistancestraingages,ifused,andtheaccuracyoftheirperformance.Adhesivesusedtobondtherocktosteelendpiecesinthedirecttensiontestwillalsobeaffectedadverselybyexcessmoisture.Note28212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythesepracticesisdependentuponthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingitandthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetestingandsampling.UsersofthesepracticesarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thesepracticesspecifyproceduresforlaboratoryrockcoretestspecimenpreparationofrockcorefromdrillcoreandblocksamplesforstrengthanddeformationtestingandfordeterminingtheconformanceofthetestspecimendimensionswithtolerancesestablishedbythispractice.Cubical,rectangular,orothershapesarenotcoveredbythispractice.However,someoftheinformationcontainedwithinthispracticeandinstandardTestMethodC170maystillbeofusetopreparingothertestspecimenshapes.1.2Rockisacomplexengineeringmaterialthatcanvarygreatlyasafunctionoflithology,stresshistory,weathering,moisturecontentandchemistry,andothernaturalgeologicprocesses.Assuch,itisnotalwayspossibletoobtainorpreparerockcorespecimensthatsatisfythedesirabletolerancesgiveninthispractice.Mostcommonly,thissituationpresentsitselfwithweaker,moreporous,andpoorlycementedrocktypesandrocktypescontainingsignificantorweak(orboth)structuralfeatures.Fortheseandotherrocktypeswhicharedifficulttoprepare,allreasonableeffortsshallbemadetoprepareaspecimeninaccordancewiththispracticeandfortheintendedtestprocedure.However,whenithasbeendeterminedbytrialthatthisisnotpossible,preparetherockspecimentotheclosesttolerancespracticableandconsiderthistobethebesteffort(Note1)andreportitassuchandifallowableornecessaryfortheintendedtest,cappingtheendsofthespecimenasdiscussedinthispracticeispermitted.Note18212;Besteffortinsurfacepreparationreferstotheuseofawel......
